However, some users have reported difficulties in finding the option to add music, or have encountered errors when trying to use it. Don't worry, we've got you covered. In this article, we will walk you through the steps to add music to your Instagram posts and share a few ideas for when you should use the feature. We will also answer some frequently asked questions and provide some troubleshooting tips in case you run into any problems.

How to add music to your Instagram posts in 4 steps

Adding music to your feed posts only takes a few simple steps and is done during the normal post creation process. Note: At this time, you can only add music to single photo posts, not carousel posts. You can choose between 5-90 seconds for the clip duration. Once the clip ends, the song loops. You can also see the number of Reels that have used each song, which can indicate if a song is popular or trending.

Step 1: Upload a photo

The first step is to create a feed post as usual. Select your photo, apply any desired edits, then tap Next.

Step 2: On the caption screen, tap “Add music”

Once you’ve reached the caption screen, you can add music below the geotag. Tap Add music or one of the suggested tracks to get started.

Step 3: Choose a song

Now comes the fun part: choosing a track! Instagram will show some suggested trending tracks under For you. If you have a specific artist or song in mind, you can search for it in our music library. Or, if you’ve saved tracks from Reels or other Instagram posts, you can find them by tapping Saved. If you tap Browse, you’ll see a list of moods, themes, and genres to inspire you.

Step 4: Choose a section of the song

After you select a specific track, you’ll see a screen with the song and a colored bar. First, tap the circle that says 30 to choose the clip duration. Once you’ve selected the duration, tap Done, and you’ll return to the screen with the colored bar. On that screen, you can drag the bar to the part of the song you want to play. The pink dots on the grey timeline indicate parts of the song where new verses or strong beats start, so they’re good spots to position your bar.

Why add music to your Instagram posts?

Adding music to your Instagram posts can have many benefits for your brand and your followers. Here are some of the reasons why you should try this feature:

It adds emotion and personality

Music is a powerful way to convey emotions and moods. By adding music to your photo, you can create a more engaging and memorable post that reflects your personality and style. For example, if you want to share a happy moment with your followers, you can add an upbeat song that matches your smile. Or, if you want to show off your adventurous side, you can add a rock song that captures your energy.

It attracts attention and interest

Music can also help you stand out from the crowd and catch your followers' attention. When they scroll through their feed, they will see a small speaker icon on your post that indicates that there is music playing. This can spark their curiosity and make them stop and listen. Plus, if they like the song, they might be more likely to like or comment on your post.

It increases engagement and loyalty

Music can also help you build stronger relationships with your followers and increase their engagement and loyalty. By adding music to your post, you can show them that you care about their preferences and tastes. You can also invite them to interact with you by asking them questions or opinions about the song or the photo. For example, you can ask them what their favorite song is, or what song they would choose for your photo. This can create a more personal and conversational tone for your post.

What about adding music to Reels and Stories?

If you want to add music to your Reels and Stories, you can do so using the same music library as for your feed posts. However, there are some differences in how you can use the feature:

Reels

Reels are short videos that you can create and share on Instagram. They are similar to TikTok videos, and they allow you to add music, effects, filters, stickers, and more. To add music to your Reels, you need to follow these steps:

  • Tap the camera icon at the top left of the screen, then swipe right to Reels.
  • Tap the music note icon at the bottom left of the screen.
  • Select a song from the list or search for a song in our music library.
  • Use the sliding bar at the bottom to choose which part of the song you want to play with your video.
  • Record your video by tapping and holding the capture button. You can also upload a video from your camera roll.
  • Edit your video by adding effects, filters, stickers, text, and more.
  • Tap Share to post your Reel to your feed or your profile.

Note: You can only add music to Reels that are 15 or 30 seconds long. You can also see the original Reel that used a song by tapping the song title at the bottom of the screen.

Stories

Stories are photos or videos that disappear after 24 hours. They are a great way to share moments from your day with your followers. To add music to your Stories, you need to follow these steps:

  • Tap the camera icon at the top left of the screen, then swipe right to Stories.
  • Take a photo or video by tapping or holding the capture button. You can also upload a photo or video from your camera roll.
  • Tap the sticker icon at the top right of the screen, then tap Music.
  • Select a song from the list or search for a song in our music library.
  • Use the sliding bar at the bottom to choose which part of the song you want to play with your photo or video.
  • You can also choose how you want to display the song on your Story. You can choose between a sticker with the song title and artist name, a sticker with lyrics, or no sticker at all.
  • Tap Done, then tap Send To to share your Story with your followers or specific people.

Note: You can only add music to Stories that are up to 15 seconds long. You can also see other Stories that used a song by tapping the song title at the top of the screen.
